The ovary is a highly compartmentalized organ consisting largely of tissue in which units called follicles are embedded. It is within follicles that oocytes grow and mature into ovulesor eggs. In female mammals especially, production of competent ovules and overall reproductive success require huge investments of metabolic resources, to which the entire body contributes. Numerous forms of intercellular communication therefore occur through highly coordinated signaling pathways within the ovary and between the ovary and the rest of the body.
