Présentation du projet

This project aims at providing a means to perform genomic selection by Canadian swine breeders. The project’s outcome will be integrated into the Canadian Swine Improvement Program (CSIP) that is run by the Canadian Centre for Swine Improvement (CCSI) who delivers genetic services to breeders. To support the CSIP, CCSI manages a national database of pedigree and performance data recorded on over 6 million individually identified pigs in Canadian pig breeding farms spanning the last 40 years. Over this time, Canadian pig breeders have selected their pigs using genetic evaluations based on standard performance recording in purebred farms. This includes sow productivity, growth, and body composition predictions using ultrasound technology. In swine production, the pyramidal structure and short generation interval allow for any genetic gain achieved at the selection level to be quickly disseminated and translated into economic gains for the entire hog industry. Improvements on different traits benefit various levels of production, processing, marketing and consumption chain. It is possible to monitor genetic progress at the selection level and evaluate the impact of this progress at the production level two generations later. The industry has advanced in the last 20 years with important genetic gains achieved through quantitative selection have been for this success. Integrating genomics into this existing structure will increase the rate of improvement flowing to the entire industry and add new traitsof importance to the industry.
