Research interest

The development of my research expertise has been directly related to fetal development and gene expression of steroidogenesis-specific enzymes involved in the metabolism of steroid hormones in gonads, adrenals and peripheral tissues, namely both placenta and fetal lungs. Androgens synthesized by the fetal lungs, estradiol synthesized by the placenta and regulation of the fetal lungs by glucocorticoids do control key events in fetal development by means of their tissue specific expression. In all cases, a spatio-temporal disruption in the synthesis or inactivation or metabolism of androgens and estrogens during pregnancy and a deregulation of glucocorticoid action in the fetal lungs is directly related to developmental pathologies. During fetal development our researches focus on two neonatal pathologies of the lung; the respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) and the bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD). More recently, looking at the role of androgens during alveolar process, we open the door for a critical role for male sex steroids on a complication of the chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) namely emphyzema. This research has specific aspects that hold potential for clinical applications: studying the metabolism and the regulation of steroid hormones by the lungs and placenta are applicable to physiology, while their actions on fetal development, and, more specifically, lung maturation, has clinical potential in the area of human health.
